The leopard gecko is a better starter reptile. To begin with, it needs a lot less room than a ball python. A leo only needs a ten gallon or its entire life while a ball python needs at least a 30 gallon to live comfortably. A beginner hobbyist usually does not have a lot of room for his/her reptiles. Also, leos are more conveniently fed than pythons. Leos only need insects such as mealworms and crickets. Pythons need frozen mice and rats. Insects are relatively cheap and easy compared to rats. Finally, ball pythons are not as easily handled than leopard geckos. Most beginner hobbyists want a reptile that can give them some attention. A ball python usually just stays in its hide. While leos will come seeking attention.( That's what mine does.) Therefore, the leopard gecko is a better starter reptile.
